And when they don't
For more than three cameras, outdoor gates far from the router, or anywhere you need reliable 24-hour recording, a wired system is better. Wi-Fi cameras depend on two things that fail in real homes: weak signal through brick walls, and router restarts. Many "the camera keeps going offline" calls we get are actually Wi-Fi coverage problems.
What we check before fitting
- Signal at the camera spot. We measure Wi-Fi strength where the camera will sit. If it's weak, we suggest moving the router or adding a mesh point or access point.
- 2.4 GHz network. Most cameras only join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Some dual-band routers need a setting changed for them to connect.
- Recording plan. A good-quality SD card for local recording, or the brand's cloud plan if you want footage safe even if the camera is stolen.
Common questions
Do Wi-Fi cameras need a wire at all?
They need a power cable to a nearby socket. Only the video goes over Wi-Fi. Fully battery-powered cameras exist but need regular charging.
What happens when the Wi-Fi or power goes off?
The camera stops sending video to the app. Many models keep recording to the SD card if they still have power. Put the router on a UPS or inverter to keep things running during cuts.
How many Wi-Fi cameras can I add?
Two or three on a home router work well. Beyond that, a wired system usually performs better and costs less per camera.
