Laptop keyboard replacement
A few dead keys, a key typing the wrong letter, or a whole row gone after tea spilled on it. Most laptop keyboards are replaced in under an hour once the part is here.
We replace laptop keyboards for most HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS and Acer models at our shop in Tragad, near Nirma University. If the keyboard is in stock, it's usually done while you wait.
Quick test before you come in
Plug in any USB keyboard. If it types fine, Windows and the laptop are healthy, and only the built-in keyboard needs work. If the USB keyboard misbehaves too, the problem is software or the board, and a new keyboard won't fix it.
Why laptop keyboards fail
A large share of the keyboards we replace have had something spilled on them. Tea with sugar is the worst: it dries sticky, and keys start missing presses a few days later, long after the spill is forgotten. The rest are wear (space bar, E, A, S on heavy typists), keys snapped off by kids or pets, and the odd laptop that was carried with a pen left on the keyboard.
Two kinds of keyboard fitting
| Type | Seen on | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Screw-fixed, separate | Many Dell, Lenovo ThinkPad, older HP | Swap the keyboard only. Quick. |
| Riveted to top cover | HP 15s, ASUS VivoBook, Acer Aspire | Replace the top cover with keyboard, or re-fix with screws |
The riveted type costs a bit more because more of the laptop comes apart. We'll tell you which one yours is when you send the model number.
Backlit or not
If your laptop has a backlit keyboard, we fit a backlit replacement so the light keeps working. Fitting a non-backlit one is cheaper and works fine, but the backlight button will do nothing. Your choice; we ask before ordering.
Need the laptop working today? A USB keyboard from the counter keeps you going while the replacement keyboard arrives.
Common questions
Can you fix just one key?
If the key cap or its clip has come off, we can often refit it with a spare from a donor keyboard. If the key doesn't register when pressed, the fault is in the keyboard's circuit sheet and the whole keyboard needs replacing.
Why is my keyboard typing letters on its own?
Usually liquid has reached the circuit sheet, or a key is stuck down underneath. Try an external USB keyboard. If that types normally, the laptop keyboard is the problem.
Some keyboards are riveted to the case. Can you still replace them?
Yes. On many HP, ASUS and Acer models the keyboard is fixed to the top cover with plastic rivets. We either replace the top cover with the keyboard, or remove the rivets and fix the new keyboard with screws. Both are quoted before work starts.
Something not working? Call before you come.
We can often tell over the phone whether it's a quick fix or a day's job.
