Laptop battery replacement

Battery lasts 30 minutes, shows "plugged in, not charging", or has started lifting the touchpad. Swollen batteries should be replaced the same week.

We replace laptop batteries for HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer and other brands at our shop in Tragad, Ahmedabad. Common models are in stock and fitted the same day.

Swollen battery? If the touchpad is lifting, the bottom cover is bulging, or the laptop rocks on a flat table, the battery is swelling. Unplug the charger, don't press on the bulge, and bring it in. A swollen lithium battery can crack the casing and, rarely, catch fire.

Signs your battery is done

  • Full charge lasts under an hour with light use
  • Percentage jumps, say from 40% straight to 5%, then the laptop shuts off
  • Windows shows "Consider replacing your battery" or "plugged in, not charging"
  • Laptop only runs while the charger is connected

"Plugged in, not charging" isn't always the battery. A faulty adapter or a loose charging port gives the same message. We check all three before suggesting a new battery.

Removable vs internal batteries

Older laptops have a battery that slides out from underneath. Swapping it takes a minute. Most laptops from the last few years have an internal battery screwed inside the base, so the bottom cover comes off. It's still a short job at the bench, but don't try it at home with a kitchen knife; we see a lot of cracked cases and torn ribbon cables from that.

Making the new battery last

  1. Don't leave the laptop on a bed or pillow while charging. Trapped heat ages a battery faster than anything.
  2. If your laptop has a battery-care setting (Lenovo Vantage, ASUS MyASUS, Dell Power Manager), set it to stop charging at around 80% when you work plugged in most of the day.
  3. Use the right adapter. A lower-wattage charger makes the laptop run hot and charge slowly.

Common questions

How do I check my battery's health on Windows?

Open Command Prompt and type powercfg /batteryreport. Windows creates a report file. Compare 'design capacity' with 'full charge capacity'. If the second is below about 60% of the first, the battery is worn out.

My touchpad is lifting up. Is that the battery?

Very likely. A swelling battery sits under the touchpad on most laptops and pushes it up. Stop charging it, keep the laptop off soft surfaces, and get the battery replaced soon.

Can I use the laptop without a battery?

Laptops with a removable battery can run on the adapter alone. Most new laptops have internal batteries and some won't start without one. Running without a battery also means a power cut shuts the laptop off instantly.

Original or compatible battery?

Original batteries last longer and hold capacity better. Good compatible ones cost less and work well for a couple of years. We stock both for common models and tell you which is which.

Something not working? Call before you come.

We can often tell over the phone whether it's a quick fix or a day's job.
