Aspire: cheap to keep running
The Aspire range is the budget laptop many families and students buy. It's also one of the easiest to keep going: screens, keyboards and batteries are widely available, and an SSD upgrade transforms the hard-disk models. The weak spot is the hinge area, so open the lid from the middle, not the corner.
Nitro and Predator
Acer's gaming laptops are good value, and they run hot. Keep the vents underneath clear, don't game on a bed, and plan a cleaning every year. Use the original high-wattage adapter, because a lower-rated charger makes the laptop throttle or drain the battery while gaming.
Common questions
My Acer Nitro fan is very loud. Is it failing?
Usually it's dust and dried thermal paste making the fan work harder. If you hear grinding or rattling rather than a whoosh, the fan bearing is worn and the fan needs replacing.
Is it worth repairing a budget Acer Aspire?
For screens, hinges, keyboards, charging ports and SSD upgrades, yes. Those repairs cost a fraction of a new laptop. For a dead board on an old Aspire, we'll compare the repair cost with a refurbished laptop.
Where's the model number on an Acer?
On the sticker underneath, starting with something like A315-xx or AN515-xx, along with the SNID number. Either helps us find the right part.
