Laptop motherboard repair at chip level

When a service centre says "board replacement", the fault is often one small component. We trace it and replace that part, at our own bench.

Surya Computers repairs laptop motherboards at component level, at our shop in Tragad, Ahmedabad. Dead boards, spill damage, short circuits, no charging and no display faults are diagnosed and fixed in-house.

Signs the fault is on the board

  • No power with a known-good adapterCharger light goes off when plugged in, or nothing at all.
  • Fan spins, screen stays blackEven on an external monitor.
  • Died after a spillTea, water, juice. Corrosion spreads within hours.
  • Died during a power cut or surgeCharging circuit or power IC usually takes the hit.
  • Gets hot without switching onA short somewhere on the power rail.
  • Random shutdowns, USB ports deadFailing components around the power or USB circuit.

How we trace a board fault

Board work starts with measurement, not guessing. We check the power rails one by one with a multimeter and a bench power supply, look for shorts with a thermal camera or by current draw, and read the board's schematic where one exists for that model. [CONFIRM: list the bench tools you actually use, e.g. hot air station, BGA rework, DC power supply, thermal camera, microscope]

Once the failed part is found, it's replaced with a matching component, and the board is tested for several hours with charging, display and USB in use.

What usually fails

From what comes to our bench, the usual culprits on budget and mid-range laptops are:

  1. Charging IC and input MOSFETs, often after using a cheap or wrong-voltage charger
  2. Power rail shorts from liquid spills, starting near the keyboard connector
  3. BIOS chip corruption after a failed update, showing as "power on, no display"
  4. GPU or chipset failures on older gaming laptops that ran hot for years

After a spill: don't switch it on to "see if it works". Power on a wet board is what turns a cleaning job into a component repair. Unplug, remove the battery if possible, and bring it in.

When we'll suggest not repairing

If the processor or graphics chip has failed on an old laptop, the repair can cost more than the laptop is worth. In that case we'll say so, recover your data from the drive, and show you refurbished options instead.

Common questions

What does chip-level repair mean?

Instead of replacing the whole motherboard, we find the failed component, such as a MOSFET, a power IC, a capacitor or a charging chip, and replace only that. It costs a fraction of a new board, and new boards for older models are often not available anyway.

Can every motherboard be repaired?

No. If the CPU or GPU itself has failed, or the board has heavy corrosion across many layers, repair isn't practical. We tell you after checking, and you pay only the inspection charge if we can't fix it.

Is my data safe during board repair?

The hard disk or SSD is removed before board work, so your data isn't touched. On a few slim laptops the storage is soldered to the board, and we'll tell you if yours is one of them.

Why did the brand quote such a high price?

Brand service centres usually replace the whole board, which often runs into five figures for a mid-range laptop. A single-component repair usually costs a fraction of that.
