Computer monitor repair
Power light on but no picture, a picture that flashes and goes dark, lines across the screen, or no power at all. Many of these are repairable without replacing the panel.
Surya Computers repairs LED and LCD computer monitors at our shop behind Nirma University, Tragad. Power and backlight faults are the most common and usually worth fixing.
The torch test
If the monitor shows a picture for a moment and then goes dark, or stays dark with the power light on, shine a phone torch at the screen at an angle. If you can make out the Windows desktop faintly, the panel is fine and only the backlight has failed. That's a repairable fault, usually at a fraction of a new monitor's price.
What we repair, and what we don't
| Fault | Our advice |
|---|---|
| No power, no light | Power board or adapter. Repair. |
| Picture flashes then dark | Backlight or LED driver. Repair. |
| No signal with a working PC and cable | Input or mainboard. Repair if parts are available. |
| Vertical lines, smudges, cracks | Panel damage. Usually replace the monitor. |
Before you bring it in
- Try a different cable (HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA) and a different port on the PC.
- If the monitor uses an external adapter brick, bring that too. Dead adapters are common.
- Note the model number from the back label.
Common questions
The monitor shows a picture for a second and then goes black.
That's almost always the backlight or its power circuit. Shine a torch on the screen when it goes dark. If you can faintly see the picture, it's the backlight, which is repairable.
Is it worth repairing a cracked monitor?
For most monitors under 24 inches, no. A replacement panel costs close to a new monitor. Larger or high-end monitors are worth a quote.
My monitor says 'No signal'.
Check the cable and that it's in the graphics card port, not the motherboard port, if your PC has a separate card. If another monitor works with the same PC, the monitor's input or board may be faulty.
