Laptop not turning on

No lights, no fan, nothing. Or lights come on but the screen stays black. Try the checks below first. If it's still dead, bring it in with the charger.

A laptop that won't turn on is the most common call we get at Surya Computers in Tragad. In most cases the fault is the adapter, the battery or the charging port, not the motherboard. Here's how to narrow it down.

Five checks you can do at home

  1. Look at the adapter lightMost adapters have a small LED. If it's off when plugged into a working socket, the adapter or its cable is dead. Try another socket and another adapter if a friend has the same brand.
  2. Hard resetUnplug the charger. If the battery is removable, take it out. Hold the power button for 30 seconds, then connect only the charger and try again. This clears leftover charge that sometimes locks the laptop up.
  3. Watch for any sign of lifeCaps Lock light, fan noise, a click from the speaker. Any of these means the board is getting power and the problem may be display or memory.
  4. Try an external monitorUse HDMI to a TV or monitor. A picture there means the laptop is running and only the screen side is faulty.
  5. Think backWas there a power cut, a spill, a fall, or a new charger recently? Tell us, because it changes where we look first.

Worried about your files?

A laptop that won't switch on almost never means the files are gone. The hard disk or SSD is a separate part. Even if the board can't be repaired, we can usually take the drive out and copy your data. If the drive itself is damaged, see data recovery.

Common questions

My laptop's power light is on, but the screen is black. What's wrong?

Connect an external monitor. If it shows a picture, the laptop's screen or display cable is faulty. If not, it's often loose RAM, a corrupted BIOS, or a board fault. Reseating the RAM fixes more of these than you'd expect.

The laptop turns on, then switches off after a few seconds.

That points to a power problem on the board, a shorted battery, or overheating. If it switches off after several minutes, especially under load, it's more likely overheating from a blocked fan.

Can a Windows update stop a laptop from turning on?

A Windows update can stop Windows from starting, but the laptop itself will still power on and show the brand logo. If you see nothing at all, not even the logo, it's a hardware problem.

Is it worth fixing a laptop that won't turn on?

Usually yes. The cause is very often the adapter, the battery or the charging port, all cheaper than a new laptop. Only full board failures on old laptops make replacement the better choice.
